US Open 2022: How to make a head-to-head golf bet

Below we tell you how to make a head to head bet for the US Open 2022.

How to make a head to head bet

First of all, what is a heads up bet in golf?

Placing a head-to-head bet is betting one player against another directly, similar to a Moneyline. Bettors will set odds on which player will post the highest finishing position, and you can choose the player you think will have the best tournament or round.

There are two ways to make a heads up bet in golf.

First of all, it is a head to head bet for the whole weekend/tournament, or you can place a head to head bet for a single round.

Typically, the most popular bets for head-to-head bets are for the whole tournament or just the first round.

An example of a Head-To-Head tournament bet would look like this.

Match of the Tournament: S. Scheffler vs. J. Thomas

  • Scottie Scheffler-120
  • Justin Thomas +105

In the example above, Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to finish the tournament higher in the standings than Justin Thomas. If you wanted to bet on Scheffler, you would have to bet $120 to win $100, or if you wanted to bet on Justin Thomas, your $100 bet would win you $105.

An example of a 1st round head to head bet would look like this.

Round Matchups (R1): J. Thomas (R1) vs. R. McIlroy (R1)

  • Justin Thomas (R1) -120
  • Rory McIlroy (R1) +100

In this example, Justin Thomas is favored to finish ahead of Rory after the first lap. Using a $100, you would need to bet $120 to win $100 if you place a bet on Justin Thomas winning this first round match. Then, if you were to do the opposite and wanted to bet that Rory would pull off the upset, you would have to bet $100 to win $100 if Rory finishes higher than Thomas after the first spin.

If the player you bet on finishes with a better score than the opposing player after that round or tournament, you will win your bet. If these two players finish with the same score or a tie, your bet is void and you will be refunded.

Betting advice: Remember to be careful if you place a head-to-head bet for the whole tournament or just for a single round.

US Open 2022 Betting: Head-to-Head Match Odds and Picks

Sam burns against Viktor Hovland (-130)

As one of the hottest golfers on the TOUR, Sam Burns gets great value in this game. Burns has made the cut in seven of his last nine tournaments and has two wins and five top-10 finishes during that streak.

This course should fit Burns’ style well as he ranks fifth on the TOUR in greens in regulation percentage. Burns’ strength and athleticism should also benefit him when hitting hard, which he has a clear advantage over Viktor Hovland.

On the TOUR this season, Hovland ranks only 86th in birdies or better in rough percentage and 66th in greens in regulation percentage. Burns is coming off a top-20 finish in his last major championship, while Hovland hasn’t finished in that position in either of his last two majors.

Talor Gooch on Tyrrell Hatton (-130)

I think Talor Gooch is getting great value in this match due to his recent appearance in rival tournament LIV. Although Gooch has changed his allegiance to the league he plays for, that doesn’t erase his success on TOUR before his departure.

On the TOUR this season, Gooch ranks 35th in birdie percentage or better from the rough and 20th for greens in regulation percentage. Meanwhile, Hatton only ranks 195th in the TOUR for greens in regulation percentage, which could cost him dearly on a course where small greens will be particularly difficult to reach.

Additionally, Hatton has struggled on bigger stages recently as he missed the cut in five of his last seven major championships (57%). Conversely, Gooch has made the cut in five of his six major league appearances (83%).
