Want to chase after Saturday’s $854 Super High 5 no-jackpot carry at Louisiana Downs? You’ll be happy to know that earning a share is mathematically simple.
Many Super High 5 bets come with a minimum bet amount of $1 and feature large fields with thousands (maybe even tens of thousands) of possible outcomes. But Louisiana Downs’ Super High 5 carries a minimum of 50 cents, and it’s up for grabs in Race 7, which features a six-horse field with just 720 possible outcomes.
Race 7 is a one mile turf allowance, and from a Brisnet speed rating perspective, #2 Beauregard (7-5) is obvious. The four-year-old gelding has posted six straight Brisnet speed ratings in the 80-88 range since transferring to the care of hot trainer David Gomez, who is winning at a 22% rate at Louisiana Downs this meet. On the other hand, Beauregard’s rivals are struggling (mostly unsuccessfully) to exceed the 80 plateau.
Beauregard technically didn’t make the superfecta in three grass starts, but two of those efforts were on the line, including a sixth-place finish after chasing a fast pace in the 1 1/16 mile Louisiana Cup Turf Classic S two weeks since. Falling through the allowance ranks can produce a winning effort from Beauregard, which should be ridden by hot jockey Carlos Lozada (a 26% winner this meet).
#3 War Account (2-1) is another key contender. The veteran gelding has knocked down eight straight Brisnet speed ratings in the 70-81 range, including a 78 while wiring a recent optional $12,500 allowance claimant for Louisiana horses racing 7 1/2 furlongs on the lawn of Louisiana Downs. Jockey Jose Guerrero and trainer Shane Wilson have teamed up to win at a rate of 25% over the past two months, so War Count definitely has some hot connections in their corner.
#5 Whitaker (3-1) has placed third in his last two starts at this course and at this class level, earning strong Brisnet speed ratings of 73 and 75, and he is a logical choice to rank among the first three.
