‘Deputy Joe’ best bet for school board | Letters to the Editor

Joe Faherty is a candidate for Citrus County School Board District 5. For those of you who haven’t met Deputy Joe Faherty, allow me to share some information.

Who is Joe Faherty?

Deputy Faherty has worked in the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office since 1998. Previously, he worked at the Department of Juvenile Justice, Youth and Family Alternatives and the Eckerd Youth Challenge for 8 years. Plus, he’s been one of my best friends for over 15 years. Over these years I have been blessed and extremely lucky to witness him and learn about him.

For 30 years, Joe worked in the criminal justice system, where he mentored, taught and influenced the lives of hundreds of young people. I was with him when a young adult approached and thanked him for his guidance and encouragement. What a tribute!

Joe’s education and experience is a perfect match for the school board. He holds a bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences and a master’s degree in business organization and safety management. He taught criminal profiling, juvenile justice and criminal investigations at Rasmussen College. He has been a School Resource Officer for 23 years and recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Association of School Resource Officers. He started and ran the popular ‘Shop With a Cop’ Christmas program for children for many years, and was an active board member of Filter Youth Development (now Filter Family Solutions) and is currently a board member. Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Club of Citrus. County. In 2020, he received the Royal Legacy First Responder Award from the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce for his work in the community.

“Deputy Joe” showed his dedication, concern and love for our young people. He cares and most importantly relates to children. He has the training, knowledge and experience necessary to serve on the school board. Not only does it “talk the talk”, but it also “walks the walk”. While he may retire as a School Resource Officer, he will never back down from his dedication to helping our young people be the best they can be.

Who is Joe Faherty? Hopefully the next District 5 School Board Commissioner!
