The No. 5 B DAWK (5-2) finally put it all together in his special seven-weight win at Keeneland on April 24. He was highly reclassified in California but never lived up to his potential there. They paid $425,000 for this one and it has road influences in its pedigree. He could be the main gear and if not he will probably press, pounce and get the first run. Either way, he should be respected his last.
No. 6 Mr. Jefferson (6-1) has plenty of experience at the stakes in a race with many unknowns from a class perspective. Its overall shape is also somewhat darkened. He ran twice on grass and twice on a wet track. If you look past those sub-par efforts, what you see is a competent performer in a fast lane with two wins and a second-place finish from four starts. It was nice to see him rally on the outside and narrowly miss 15-1 in the Tesio Stakes on April 16, and it’s not like the pace was fast that day. He got a good late pace note last time out and fits in well in this group.
No. 8 Unikee (4-1) has decent sprinting form and Irad Ortiz Jr. remains on board for profitable first coach Terry Pompay. He looked good stalking and graduating in the mud of Gulfstream Park at six furlongs on March 12, and fought in moderate splits and missed a header in an extended sprint on a pitch fast on April 23. He seems to be settling in and that should help him get two turns.
1 Ethereal Road (3-1) will be remembered as the striped horse of the Kentucky Derby, and that Wayne Lukas move also helped Rich Strike to come in and produce one of the biggest upsets in the history of this race. This unrated event is designed as preparation for the Belmont Stakes. He drilled a five-panel bullet for this May 11 and his new driver Luis Saez will probably want to sit down and make a late run.
No. 4 The Addison Pour (15-1) ran well in all four starts and his speed rating soared in a nose-to-mile victory and a sixteenth at Laurel Park on April 30. You have to respect the very productive Toledo/Russell team and this one should sit a decent stalking trip.
